GUZHENG

Start your musical journey with the Guzheng, a beginner-friendly instrument known for its elegant sound, pre-tuned strings, and versatility in solo or orchestral performances. Learn to create beautiful melodies with just your fingers under the guidance of our experienced teachers at Chinese Instrument Music School.

ERHU

Embrace the Erhu, a versatile instrument that lets you express a range of emotions and deepen your understanding of Chinese culture. Master proper bowing techniques and achieve a clean sound in our fun and engaging classes. Plus, learn essential Erhu care to become a self-sufficient musician.

DIZI

Discover the Dizi, a unique flute with a bright, humming sound produced by a reed membrane in its extra hole. Available in various sizes, our teachers will ensure the perfect fit and guide you through the proper playing techniques.

OTHER INSTRUMENTS

From winds to plucked and bowed strings, we offer a variety of instruments to ignite your child’s musical spark. Explore the Pipa, Zhongruan, Yangqin and other chinese instruments.

Our Syllabus

Our syllabus is based on the Teng Academy Graded Examinations for Chinese Music Instruments. Students also have the option to learn under the NAFA (CCOM) syllabus or for leisure learning. Our one-to-one classes are 45 minutes long and 60 minutes for group classes (2-4pax). The 4 levels of learning are categorized based on the syllabus, Beginners (Grade 1-3), Intermediate (Grade 4-6), Advanced (Grade 7-8), and Professional (Certificate in Professional Performance – Diploma).

Here are some of the requirements for the grading examination at CIMS:

The music pieces are listed in the Examinations music scores. Candidates are to purchase the Examinations Scores to register for the Examinations

What Chinese musical instruments do you teach?

We offer lessons for a wide range of instruments including: Guzheng, Erhu, Dizi, Ruan, Liuqin, Yangqin, Pipa, Suona and Hulusi

Yes! Our lessons cater to all stages of learning, from total beginner to advanced levels and suitable for all ages between 5-70. In fact, most of our students here start with zero background. As long as you have the interest for the instrument, you will be able to learn to play simple tunes within the first few lessons!

Our lessons are mainly and preferably conducted in-person, at our studios, for the best and full learning experience. However, if student prefer for online lesson, we will be able make arrangements for it.

1-to-1 lessons are at 45 mins each, and Group (2-4 students) lessons are at 60 mins each.

Lesson fees for our courses range from $240-$400/month (4 lessons), depending on the choice of instrument, individual/group learning, and level of learning. Drop us a message and we will be able to provide you with more details based on your learning preferences.

Yes! We do offer trial lessons for each of the instruments (choose 1, or 2 or 3 instruments for trial) if you are still undecided on which instrument to learn, and would like to experience the fun and engaging learning experience with our dedicated instructors here at Chinese Instrumental Music School. Do drop us a message and we will be able to arrange for a trial lesson slot for you, at your preferred days and timings, at current promotional rate!

Yes! We are proud to share that over the years, we have nurtured over 200 students (and counting) who have – attained various levels of grades in their period of learning, gained successful direct entries to their choice schools via Direct School Admission (DSA), and won numerous prizes in both National & International competitions. Graded Examination: It is important to have learning targets when it comes to learning an instrument, students (and parents) can see significant progress. Our teaching syllabuses are based on the graded examination (Grades 1-8, followed by Diploma) conducted annually by TENG and NAFA. Our highly experienced instructors will guide students to achieve their learning milestones, through step-by-step approach using various pedagogies suited for each learner.

DSA preparation: We have successfully helped many students gain direct entry to their choice schools via the Direct Schools Admission (DSA) option.

Competitions: Each year, CIMS prepares our students to participate in various competitions, at both National and International levels (e.g. Singapore Chinese Music Competition, Nanyang International Music Competition, Nanyang Cup International Competition, AAA World Music Competition, just to name a few). As an optional Students (and parents) can discuss with their instructors for their recommendations and advice, based on the readiness of the student.

Performance opportunities: Graded examinations and competitions aside, we hold annual in-house showcases for our students, as a platform for them to perform, watch and learn from each other’s performance, and as checkpoints for their learning.
